I did a literary essay about a story called "The Prison".
“The Prison”, written by Bernard Malamud, talked about a man called Tommy Castelli, who almost went to prison. Because of this, he was obliged to work in a candy store and marry a girl he did not love. This man caught a girl stealing a candy. In this essay the themes of “life as a prison” and “hope for a change” will be analysed.
The story had the theme “life as a prison” because Tommy felt that his own life was a prison, because he was forced to left his dreams, work in a candy store and marry a girl that he did not like. ‘He thought about life. You could never see the sky or the ocean because you were in a prison, except that nobody calls it a prison’. Also because, when Tommy was young, he almost went to prison. ‘But it was getting in with them and their cars, leading to the holdup of a liquor store’.
It also has the theme “hope for a change” for two reasons. First, because when he was young, he escaped to Texas because he did not want to marry Rosa and work at a candy store, he escaped hoping something to change. ‘He wouldn’t spit on a candy store, and Rosa was to plain and lank a chick for his personal taste, so he beat it off to Texas’. And second, because Tommy hoped to change the little girl’s life, because he wanted to save the little girl of ruining his life, as him, for stealing. ‘He felt he ought to do something for her, warn her to cut it out befor she get trapped and fouled up her life before it get started’.
“Life as a prison” and “hope for a change” were the themes analysed in this essay. I believe that these themes represent the story very well because the main idea of the story is that Tommy feels that his life is like a prison and hopes the little girl to change her behaviour.
